Although Joseph Raphael (also known as Joe Raphael) lived most of his life in Europe, he was one of the foremost advocates of Impressionism in California. His early paintings were darker and influenced by Dutch Genre painting, but later in Joseph Raphaels' career his palette lightened and his paintings reflected his close proximity to French Impressionism. He was primarily an oil painter, but his body of work also includes watercolor paintings, etchings, pen and ink drawings and woodcuts. Joseph Raphael is best known for his vibrant landscape paintings, still lifes and figural scenes.
